Try to break down Jiu-Jitsu

Breakdown Jiu-Jitsu

1. Jiu-Jitsu is a positional based fighting system. All Fighting will be within a

certain Range and Position. Standing, Mount, Side, Back, Guard, Turtle

2. Within the positions you only have a Neutral position or someone on top

and/or someone on bottom

3. Within the Ground Positions we have only Pins (upper body) and Guards

(lower body)

4. If I am on Top of a Pin: My goal is control into Submission

5. Pins are a dominant position if I am on top: Mount, Side mount, Back Mount

6. If I am on Bottom of a Pin: My goal is Escape and Submission Escapes

7. Being on Bottom of a Pin is an inferior position

8. If I am on top of Guard: My goal is to pass the Guard

9. If I am on Bottom of Guard: My goal is to Sweep/get a reversal, Or control

and Submit my opponent

10.The Guard is a neutral position

11.The number one way to submit someone is pressure. Pressure over time will

exhaust your opponent and take out all of their defenses

12. Defense is the foundation of Jiu-Jitsu. You should always be aiming for

becoming unsubmittable, unmountable, uncontrollable, etc. Escapes and

Submission Escapes are the key.

13. Position before Submission: Always prioritize maintaining and gaining

dominant positions over attempting submissions. There is a time and a place

for speed based submissions but control based submissions are superior

14. Positional Hierarchy: understand the flow chart of how to defeat your

opponent. Takedown – Pass the Guard – Control – Advance Position –

Control – Submission

15.Grips are one of the most important aspects of grappling. My goal is to

inhibit my opponents movement as much as possible while increasing my

own ability to move.

16.Distance Management: from further range, anyone can throw a haymaker

and knock you out. Therefore your goal is to get into closer range where you

can use grappling to reduce the power of punches

17.Pressure testing: the best training will be to test your technique against full

resistance to proof efficacy.

18. Submission: the final goal is to strangle your opponent or break any limb so

catastrophically that it inhibits your opponents ability to continue fighting.
